Self Stimulatory Behavior In AUTISM

Self Stimulatory behavior(Stimmering) or Stereotype behavior of a child with Autism may vary widely, Some of the most common stereotype behaviors, as below

1. Auditory

Covering Uncovering Ears, tapping ears, humming/grunting/high pitched shrieking, snapping fingers, repeating same sound, imitating sound, repeating music, song at inappropriate time

2. Visual

Starring light, Fan, Corner eying, turning light on and off.

3. Tactile

Scratching, rubbing, tapping fingers, Hand flapping

4. Vestibular

Jumping, Running, rocking side to side

5. Taste

Licking, Sucking, Spitting

6. Smell

Sniffing various things and people

Apart from the above, various other stereo type behavior may be present. As mentioned in my other Blogs, each Autistic kid is unique. 

ex ; Some kid may like to keep things in between their fingers and role it. etc

In further topics, I will try to explore how we can slowly modify these self stimulating behavior into more functional activities.
